The Frankston ‘Cambur' Blues
have signed former Albury and Dandenong guard Gavin
Illangakoon - a standout point guard at Westfield State
from 2004-2007) - for the 2010 season.
Illangakoon will replace the departing Adam Nener, who has returned
to his home club Willetton in Western Australia as their
development officer.
Illangakoon will join the Blues for their pre-season start this
week.
He played at Albury in 2008 after returning from a four-year stint
in the United State at Westfield State College. He then re-joined
his junior club Dandenong last year, where he averaged 5.8 points
per game in 27 games for the Rangers.
"I am looking forward to January and the start of pre-season with
Frankston," Illangakoon said. "They have always been a successful
club in the SEABL and seem like a great bunch of guys to play
with.
"Hopefully, I can find a role to play on the team right away and
contribute to even more success in 2010."
Blues coach Bill Runchey said he tried to recruit
Illangakoon two years ago.
"He is an impressive and talented individual who I am confident
will fit into our rotation and philosophy straight away," he
said.
"Losing Adam (Nener) may not seem like we lost much on the stats
sheet, but he was the consummate role player and certainly
strengthened our defense when he was on court.
"I expect Gavin will give us a bit more offensively than Adam did,
and I am hoping he will buy in to the defensive aspect of our team,
as well."
The Blues' 2010 season will begin in March.
