2011 MASCAC Men’s Outdoor Track & Field Championships

FITCHBURG, Mass. -- Westfield State University captured its 14th Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference Men’s Outdoor Track & Field championship in the last 15 years and its 33rd overall by taking top honors at the 2011 conference championships that took place at Fitchburg State’s Elliot Athletic Complex Saturday afternoon. The MASCAC Championship was once again part of the New England Alliance Championships, which brings together competitors from both the MASCAC and Little East Conference.
Westfield State posted a team score of 252 points in the competition to double up the total of 125 points collected by runner-up and defending champion Fitchburg State University. Worcester State University finished in third place with 116 points, while Bridgewater State University and the Massachusetts Maritime Academy followed in fourth and fifth place with 72 and 42 points, respectively.
Six different individuals captured conference titles in leading Westfield State to the overall team crown, as seniors Bob Archambault (Seekonk, Mass.) and Chris Kerr (Monson, Mass.) took top honors in the shot put (14.29 meters) and 110 meter hurdles (15.49), respectively, while juniors Jeff Smith (Whitman, Mass.) and Patrick Regan (Wilbraham, Mass.) claimed titles in the javelin (61.35 meters) and 1,500 meters (3:56.59). Sophomore Brendan Corcoran (Walpole, Mass.) repeated as the league’s 800 meter champion with a time of 1:56.18, while freshman Zachery Madera (Southwick, Mass.) claimed the crown in the 200 meters (22.76) for the Owls while running a leg on the winning 4 X 400 meter relay (3:29.00) with junior Jim Flynn (Shrewsbury, Mass.) and sophomores Seth Arnold (Southwick, Mass.) and Scott Bockus (Athol, Mass.).
Fitchburg State senior Matt Muolo (Stoneham, Mass.) was the lone double event winner of the day, as he took top honors in the discus for a second straight spring (46.46 meters) while claiming the title in the hammer throw (49.39) as well. Senior Alex LeBlanc (Ashburnham, Mass.) set a new conference mark in the pole vault (4.60 meters) for the Falcons, while senior Matt Spano (Gardner, Mass.) and junior Chris Kibler (Bath, Maine) were also victorious for Fitchburg State in the 3,000 meter steeplechase (9:59.52) and 10,000 meters (32:47.88), respectively.
Worcester State received a trio of individual titles from senior RJ Stahelski (South Deerfield, Mass.), sophomore Todd Paquin (Pelham, N.H.) and freshman Kevin Maciel (Tewksbury, Mass.) in the 400 meters (49.29), long jump (6.61 meters) and 400 meter hurdles (56.33), respectively, while the Lancer tandem of Paquin and freshmen Randy Joseph-Jones (Beverly, Mass.), Devlin Crawford (Randolph, Mass.) and Julius White (Dorchester, Mass.) took the 4 X 100 meter relay crown with a time of 43.36.
Bridgewater State sophomores Felix Mensah (Lowell, Mass.) and David Phipps (Attleboro, Mass.) took top honors in the 100 meters (11.14) and 5,000 meters (15:50.84), respectively, while Massachusetts Maritime senior Rory O’Donnell (Somerset, Mass.) and junior Chris Sullo (Canton, Mass.) repeated as league champions in the triple jump (13.56) and high jump (1.93 meters).
Westfield State also captured the New England Alliance title for the first time in three years and for the 12th time overall, as the Owls wrestled back the crown from Southern Maine after a two-year stint by outdistancing the Huskies by 61 points (158-97). Fitchburg State and Worcester State finished third and fourth in the Alliance scoring with 85 and 79 points, respectively, while Bridgewater State (43 points) and Massachusetts Maritime (28 points) placed ninth and 10th, respectively, in the final Alliance standings.
