GORHAM, Maine -- Westfield State captured its sixth straight Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference Men’s Indoor Track & Field title on Saturday afternoon, as the Owls posted a 21-point victory over runner-up Worcester State at the 2012 Championships that took place at Southern Maine’s Costello Athletic Fieldhouse Complex as part of the New England Alliance Championships.
Westfield State posted a team score of 188 points on the day to outdistance Worcester State’s total of 167 points, while Bridgewater State (95 points) and Fitchburg State (71 points) rounded out the team competition in third and fourth place, respectively. The Owls have won all six MASCAC indoor championships, which have been contested since 2007.
Six different individuals captured conference crowns on the day for Westfield State, led by junior Brendan Corcoran (Walpole, Mass.), who took titles in both the 400 meters (50.72) and 800 meters (1:57.89) and broke his own conference record in the latter event. Junior Thomas Gauger (Billerica, Mass.) also broke his own conference mark in the pole vault (4.80 meters/15-09.00) for the Owls, who also received individual crowns from seniors Patrick Regan (Wilbraham, Mass.) and Christopher Kerr (Monson, Mass.), junior Robert Fitzgibbon (Walpole, Mass.) and sophomore Cameron Fairbanks (Hopkinton, Mass.) in the 600 meters (1:24.79), 55 meter hurdles (8.08), high jump (1.93 meters/6-04.00) and mile run (4:26.00), respectively.
Worcester State junior Todd Paquin (Pelham, N.H.) was the lone triple event winner during the competition, as he copped titles in the long jump (6.72 meters/22-00.75) as well as the 55 meters (6.57) and 200 meters (23.11), while the Lancers also broke the conference mark in the 4 x 400 relay with a time of 3:26.89. Bridgewater State received individual crowns from junior Michael McPherson (Mansfield, Mass.) and sophomores Joshua Danner-Hicks (Haverhill, Mass.) and Andrew Sukeforth (Middleboro, Mass.) in the shot put (15.35 meters/50-04.50), triple jump (13.62 meters/44-08.25) and 1,000 meters (2:32.08), as McPherson broke a seven-year old MASCAC mark in his event, while the Bears also set a new league standard in the 4 x 800 relay with a time of 8:09.12. Fitchburg State’s senior tandem of Matt Muolo (Stoneham, Mass.) and Chris Kibler (Bath, Maine) rounded out the list of individual champions with record-setting performances in the weight throw (18.40 meters/60-04.50) and 3,000 meters (8:42.04), respectively, as Muolo broke his conference record in his event.
Westfield State finished as the runner-up to UMass Dartmouth in the 2012 New England Alliance Championships, which combines competition between institutions from both the MASCAC and Little East Conference. The Corsairs posted a team score of 145 points to outdistance the Owls’ mark of 94 points in the Alliance scoring.
