Academy President Admiral Francis X. McDonald and Director of Athletics Garin Veris were joined by fellow Buccaneer vice presidents, administrators and staff members at a special groundbreaking ceremony last Thursday. The project will begin in earnest this week and is expected to be completed by early November. “The unprecedented growth of the Academy in the last decade has created wonderful opportunities for expansion of our physical plant, and I am pleased that we will be able to offer our cadets with more space for intercollegiate and intramural competition,” McDonald said of the project. “The entire Massachusetts Maritime community will benefit greatly by the turf installation.” “Hendy Field is one of the most bucolic fields in all of college baseball, and providing our student-athletes with opportunities for increased home competition dates without the worry of inclement weather is something that provides a definite boost to our program,” Veris said. “The addition of more practice space for our intercollegiate teams and more competitive space for our intramural and club programs will provide a long term benefits for the Academy going forward.” To view the progress of the artificial turf installation at Commodore Hendy Field throughout the fall, please visit: https://www.maritime.edu/sites/all/themes/mma/webcams/gym.swf. A 1984 graduate, Donovan, compiled a 21-3 record on the mound in his three seasons as a Tiger. Now Donovan’s tackling a big role just five miles north of his hometown. Last August, Donovan was named head coach of the baseball team at Salem State University after two seasons as pitching coach. With Donovan at the helm, the Vikings are off and running this season.
