Angela Baumann Named First Full-Time MASCAC Commissioner
WESTFIELD, MA - Westfield State College President
and the Council of President’s liaison to the Massachusetts
State College Athletic Conference (MASCAC), Dr. Vicky
Carwein announced the hiring of Angela
Baumann as the first full-time Commissioner of the
Conference. Baumann comes to the MASCAC after nearly a decade in
the athletic department at Montana State.
Baumann has headed the marketing efforts at Montana State since December of 1996. In March of 1999, she was promoted to Assistant Athletic Director. Baumann oversaw many different aspects of the Bobcat athletic department during her career in Bozeman including special events, ticket operations and corporate relations. An active member of the National Association of Collegiate Marketing Association, she is the recipient of three gold, three silver and onebronze NACMA awards in recent years.
“The membership of the MASCAC is extremely excited to be entering this new and positive phase in our conference history,” said Dr. Carwein. “Angela Baumann brings a wealth of knowledge, motivation and excitement to this position and she promises to provide us with dynamic leadership as we look to improve the way the MASCAC serves its student-athletes.”
Prior to Montana State, Baumann spent over two years at East Carolina where she served as the Marketing Coordinator and then Interim Director of Marketing for the Recreational Services department.
“I am very excited and honored to work with the MASCAC,” stated Baumann. “The conference has a supportive group of Presidents and an outstanding group of Athletic Directors and student-athletes with a very bright future. I am looking forward to start working with this talented group of individuals.”
Baumann returns to her Division III roots where she was a standout volleyball player at Wisconsin-LaCrosse. She was a four-year starter at setter and was named to the WWIAC Scholastic Honor Roll in 1991 and 1992. She received her degree in Physical Education-Sport Management in 1992 before earning her master’s degree in Sport Management from Ohio State in 1994.
The MASCAC is the oldest Division III men’s and women’s intercollegiate league in the nation. The eight-member conference currently consists of Bridgewater State College, Fitchburg State College, Framingham State College, Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts, Massachusetts Maritime Academy, Salem State College, Westfield State College and Worcester State College.
Baumann will be just the fifth person in the past 26 years to serve as commissioner. Paul Bogan, Athletic Director at Westfield State, took over as commissioner in 1980 before Salem State Athletic Director John Galaris was named Commissioner a decade later. 1997 began a new era in MASCAC administration as Bridgewater State Athletic Director John Harper served a three-year term before MCLA Athletic Director Scott F. Nichols completed two three-year terms. Worcester State Athletic Director Sue Chapman became the conference’s first Assistant Commissioner and has held that position for the past nine years.
