Five Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference student-athletes have been recognized by the Eastern College Athletic Conference with weekly accolades in men's and women's basketball and men's and women's indoor track and field.
Alex Santos of Worcester State received the DIII New England Men's Basketball Rookie of the Week while Forbasaw Nkamebo of Westfield State was named Women's Basketball Player of the Week. For indoor track and field, Samantha Richner and Jayci Andrews of Bridgewater State earned DIII New England Women's Athlete and Rookie of the Week while Adrian Higgins of Bridgewater State was Rookie of the Week on the men's side.
Santos notched a team-high 23 points to go along with seven rebounds and six assists in the Lancers’ setback to Westfield State University in the MASCAC tournament.
Nkamebo averaged 19.5 points and 12.5 rebounds while shooting 52 percent (14-27) from the floor to lead the Owls to the MASCAC Tournament title while earning Tournament MVP accolades. The senior tallied 20 points, 16 rebounds and two blocks in the 85-48 win over MCLA in the semifinals, then followed up with 19 points and nine rebounds on 8-of-12 shooting in the 92-86 title game win over Framingham State.
Higgins ran a leg on the Bears’ record-setting distance medley relay which placed 13th at the New England Intercollegiate Amateur Athletic Association (NEICAAA) Championship with a time of 10:22.69.
Andrews set a pair of school records at the New England Intercollegiate Amateur Athletic Association (NEICAAA) Championships. She recorded a preliminary time of 57.14 seconds in the 400-meter dash as she broke the previous mark of 58.20 seconds set back in 2011. The freshman also ran a leg on the Bears’ record-setting 4x400-meter relay that finished with a time of 3:59.24, eclipsing the previous mark of 3:59.74 set in 2014.
