Bridgewater State Men, Women Seek Third Straight MASCAC Titles at 2023 Outdoor Track and Field Championship
Both the Bridgewater State men and women are looking for their third straight MASCAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships on Saturday, April 29. The event is hosted by Fitchburg State at the Elliot Field Athletic Complex.

Both the Bridgewater State men and women are looking for their third straight MASCAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships on Saturday, April 29. The event is hosted by Fitchburg State at the Elliot Field Athletic Complex.
The meet will begin at 10 am with the start of the field events while the track events will begin at 11 am. Live results will be available throughout the meet and complete results and recap will be on mascac.com following the completion of the day.
During last year's championship, the Bears took home 237 points over second place finisher Westfield State who had 141. Fitchburg State was third with 130 while Mass. Maritime and Worcester State rounded out the finishers in fourth and fifth with 50 and 48 points, respectively.
Bridgewater State had 12 individual champions on Saturday with four finishing with two honors. Trevor Wysong captured top honors in both the 10,000-meter run (34:12.86) and the 5,000-meter run (15:15.39), while Barinelli placed first in the long jump (21'11.75"/6.70m) as well as the high jump (6'4.75"/1.95m). Adigwe won both hurdle events as he posted a time of 15.01 seconds in the 110-meter hurdles and 59.77 seconds in the 400-meter hurdles. McBirney was the first to cross the finish line in the 1,500-meter run (4:04.82) and the 800-meter run (1:57.95).
Matthew Lighten broke his own school record in the 100-meter dash with a time of 10.71 seconds. He eclipsed his previous mark of 10.72 seconds set earlier this season at the Corsair Classic. Jacob Belcher placed first in the hammer throw with a toss of 146 feet, three inches (44.59m). Corey Stalters broke his owns school record in the javelin with a distance of 207 feet, three inches (63.19m). He eclipsed his previous mark of 205 feet, three inches (62.56m) set earlier this season at the Jerry Gravel Classic. Gavin Weldon grabbed top honors in the 200-meter dash with a time of 22.06 seconds.
For Westfield State, the Owls captured one individual title and two of the relays. Brenden LaForest crossed the line first in the 400 meter dash with a time of 50.14. He then joined teammates Lucas Roberts, Brendan DeBarber and Colby Ranck to win the 4x400 meter relay in a time of 3:28.51. DeBarber, Ranck and Roberts along with Sebastian Metcalfe claimed the 4x100 meter relay crown with a time of 44.29.
Fitchburg State had three individual honorees and the final relay on Saturday. Nick Zeoli was a two-time champion in the shot put with a top throw of 13.75m and discus with a top distance of 41.80m. Gene Bouthiette had the top clearing in the men's pole vault with a height of 3.55m for the MASCAC title. The quartet of Trevor Fields, Nick Sachetta, Christian Bueno-Campos and Taban Manyok earned the 4x800 meter relay title with a time of 8:25.15.
Closing out the individual winners was Worcester State with two. In the 3,000 meter steeplechase, Drew Fottler outleaped the competition with a time of 9:59.92 to earn the MASCAC crown. On the field side, Kyle Haley had the top leap in the triple jump with a distance of 13.37m.
For the women at the 2022 Championship, the Bears came in first with 276.50 points while runner-up Westfield State was next with 136.50 Worcester State was third with 91, Framingham State fourth with 65 while Fitchburg State and Mass. Maritime rounded out the team scores in fifth and sixth, respectively.
Bridgewater State had an outstanding showing, taking home 12 individual titles and all three relay crowns on the day. Jayci Andrews captured top honors in both the 100-meter hurdles (14.33) and 400-meter hurdles (1:04.32), while teammate Alison McDonough finished first in the long jump with a meet-best leap of 17 feet, 8.75 inches (5.40m) and added a first place showing in the 100-meter dash (12.43).
The Bears also received MASCAC Champion performances from Madison Ashley in the 200-meter dash (25.54), Kiara Abrantes in the 400-meter dash (1:00.18), Nicole Major in the 800-meter run (2:25.07) and Julie Glavin in the 1,500-meter run (4:59.04).
Bridgewater State captured all three relay events. McDonough, Jailene Escalera, Abrantes and Ashley placed first in the 4x100 (48.55), while Abrantes, Lily Marra, Lindsey Golden and Andrews grabbed top honors in the 4x400 (4:09.64). Major, Megan Leary, Glavin and Emma Rand teamed up for a first-place finish in the 4x800 (10:28.74).
On the field side, Ashley Garvey placed first in the discus throw (116'2"/35.42m) and hammer throw (133'1"/40.58m), Abbi Peterson in the high jump (5'3"/1.60m) and Alexa Wilson in the pole vault (8'0"/2.44m).
Westfield State earned three individual crowns on Saturday. Amy O'Sullivan was a two-time winner in both the 5,000 and 10,000 meters with a time of 18:52.63 and 40:31.90, respectively. Teammate Vicky Marin had the top distance in the triple jump with a conference winning leap of 11.11m.
Sthanisha Moreau brought home an individual title for Worcester State in the shot put. Her top heave of 10.83m was good enough to bring home the MASCAC crown in the event. Joining her was Riley Sanderson who had a top heave of 42.66m to earn an individual title.
Rounding out the individual winners was Emily Newcomb from Framingham State. Her time of 12:43.07 was not only the best 3,000m steeplechase time of the day, but it is the first MASCAC title won by the Rams since they first started competing in women's outdoor in 2019.
