After competing at the NCAA Championship last week, eight student-athletes from around the MASCAC earned All-American accolades for their efforts during the outdoor track and field championship.
Kiara Abrantes, Jailene Escalera, Grace Inacio, Alison McDonough, Serenity Sands and Corey Stalters of Bridgewater State, Liam Bourassa of Fitchburg State and Liam Higgins of Mass. Maritime all earned the prestigious honor.
Corey Stalters concluded his superb Bridgewater State University men's track & field career with another All-American performance. Stalters finished sixth in the javelin at the NCAA Division III Outdoor Championships Thursday at the Spire Institute & Academy. His best throw was his second, 211 feet and four inches (64.43m), that had him in third place at the time. The graduate student holds the BSU record in the javelin at 226 feet, two inches (68.94m). A four-time All-New England selection and a New England Intercollegiate Amateur Athletic Association champion, Stalters is a three-time Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference champion.
Joining Stalters as first team All-Americans are Alison McDonough, Kiara Abrantes, Grace Inacio and Jailene Escalera who finished sixth in the 4x100m relay. The quartet was the first in BSU history to qualify for the national meet. They ran the final race in 46.33 seconds, just off the school record of 46.30 the Bears ran on Thursday in the preliminaries.
Abrantes and McDonough would earn individual All-American honors in their respective events. Abrantes finished the 400 preliminary race in 55.98 seconds. The eighth and final qualifying time was 55.30 seconds. Seeded 17th in the 22-woman field, Abrantes was third among New England runners. She was also a second-team All-American during the indoor season. McDonough finished her last 100 hurdles race in 14.47 seconds. The final qualifying time was 14.12 seconds. She was also a second-team All-American during the indoor championships in March.
Sands, a two-time first-team indoor All-American, was making her sixth overall appearance in the NCAAs (two indoors, four in a row outdoors). Seeded No. 3, Sands cleared the first two heights of five feet, three inches and five feet, five inches (1.65m) on her second attempts. But she missed on three attempts at five feet, six inches (1.68m). A Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference and Division III New England champion, Sands leaves BSU as the school record-holder in the indoor high jump (5'8.5"/1.74m).
Bourassa placed ninth overall in the javelin with a toss of 62.59 meters at the Outdoor Track and Field National Championships. With that throw, he earned second team All-American honors in the javelin. Bourassa entered the meet ranked first in the nation in the javelin after recording a meet and facility record throw of 68.99 meters at the 2025 DIII New England Championships, hosted by the Coast Guard Academy earlier this month.
Higgins qualified for his second NCAA Championship after ending the year with the fourth longest throw in DIII in the javelin. At last week's meet, Higgins finished 12th to earn a spot on the All-American second team with a top throw of 58.55m.
