Six MASCAC Student-Athletes Named NEFW DII/DIII Football All-New England Team
Jack Lavanchy of Bridgewater State, Joshua Onujiogu, Joe Wilder of Framingham State, Zach Ziemba of Plymouth State, Marvey Mathurin of UMass Dartmouth and Jacob Maher of Worcester State were named to the New England Football Writers DII/DIII Football All-New England team as announced on Sunday.
Jack Lavanchy of Bridgewater State, Joshua Onujiogu, Joe Wilder of Framingham State, Zach Ziemba of Plymouth State, Marvey Mathurin of UMass Dartmouth and Jacob Maher of Worcester State were named to the New England Football Writers DII/DIII Football All-New England team as announced on Sunday.
In ten games this season, Lavanchy hauled in 80 passes for 1,193 yards and nine touchdowns as he set the BSU single-season mark for receptions. The Walpole, Massachusetts native is currently tied for eighth in all of Division III in receptions per game (8.0), and ranks ninth nationally in receiving yards per game (119.3). Lavanchy set the Bears' single-game receiving records with 14 catches for 254 yards in a 27-20 Homecoming setback to Western Connecticut State University on October 21st.
Wilder, who anchored the Rams offensive line, was previously recognized as the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) Offensive Lineman of the Year as well as a first team All-MASCAC selection. The Rams averaged 407 yards of offense per game including averaging over 200 rushing yards per contest.
Onujiogu, a first team All-MASCAC selection, led the Rams with 11.5 sacks on the season and 18.5 tackles for a loss. Onujiogu recorded 62 total tackles on the season including 41 solo stops to go along with a fumble recovery and two pass breakups.
Ziemba, already named the MASCAC Defensive Player of the Year and an All-Conference First Team Defense honoree, was also named to the NEFWA All-New England Team last fall. Ziemba anchored the backfield of the conference's best scoring defense. The Panthers allowed just 9.8 points per game in regular season action, a mark that was the fifth lowest in NCAA Division III. He finished the year with 55 tackles, including 33 solo tackles, and was second in the MASCAC with two fumble recoveries. Ziemba added a pair of interceptions, two pass breakups and two blocked kicks, including one in the team's 16-13 overtime win against Framingham State that ended up securing the MASCAC title for PSU.
A First Team All-MASCAC selection, Mathurin is one of the most successful linebackers in UMass Dartmouth program history. He closes as the career leader in tackles for loss with 49, and re-set his own single-season record with 17.5 tackles for loss during the 2017 season. All-time, he closes his Corsair career sixth on the tackles list (284). As a senior, Mathurin put forth his most productive season, leading the UMass Dartmouth roster and ranking third in the MASCAC with 9.5 tackles per game (95 total). The senior put forth a single-game career high on Oct. 13 against Bridgewater State, leading all players with 15 total tackles (12 solo), including 2.5 tackles for loss. In every game on the season, he registered at least one tackle for loss and accumulated a career-high five sacks.
Maher, a 6-3 sophomore tight end, finished the 2017 season with a league-best 14 receiving touchdowns for a team-best 84 points on the season. He totaled 986 receiving yards, averaging 98.6 yards per game for the second-best mark in the MASCAC. Maher also rushed 10 times for 13 yards and earned a spot on the MASCAC First-Team All-Conference as a tight end this season.
A total of 30 players representing 20 different teams were honored with selection to the All-New England Team including six players from the MASCAC. The 2017 Division II/III All‐New England Team will be honored at the New England Football Writers Captains and Awards Banquet on Tuesday, December 5th at the Montvale Plaza in Stoneham, Massachusetts.
