GORHAM, Maine-- Westfield State College captured its third
straight Massachusetts State College Athletic Conference men's
indoor track and field title on Saturday afternoon by posting an 85
point victory over runner-up Fitchburg State at the 2009 league
championships at the University of Southern Maine's Costello Sports
Complex Fieldhouse.
The Owls took top honors in 10 individual events and one relay to
post a team score of 241 points, while the Falcons captured a pair
of individual events and the other relay for a team score of 156
points. Worcester State was third in team competition with 56
points, while Bridgewater State (37) and Salem State (10) placed
fourth and fifth, respectively.
Junior Marc Gomes (Springfield, Mass.) captured
three individual championships on the day for Westfield State, as
he took top honors in the 55 meters (6.58), 200 meters (22.72) and
400 meters (51.14), while freshman Jon Joyce (Miflord, Mass.) took
crowns in the mile (4:22.33) and 3000 meters (8:55.48) for the
Owls, who also received titles from senior Nathan
Landry (Chelmsford, Mass.) in the shot put (14.85 meters)
and weight throw (15.29 meters). Junior John
Connolly (Weymouth, Mass.), sophomore Mike
Chapin (Shrewsbury, Mass.) and freshman Jeric
Tyler (Pittsfield, Mass.) were also winners for Westfield
State in the 1000 meters (2:39.00), 55 meter high hurdles (8:45)
and triple jump (13.33 meters), respectively. The Owls also
claimed the 4 X 800 relay championship with a time of 8:25.55.
Senior Brian Schell (Wilmington, Mass.) and
sophomore Alex LeBlanc (Ashburnham, Mass.) were
victorious in the 600 meters (1:24.93) and pole vault (4.34 meters)
on the afternoon for Fitchburg State, which also captured the 4 X
400 relay in a time of 3:29.72. Senior Mark
Johnson (Woburn, Mass.) and freshman Ian
Fields (Shrewsbury, Mass.) took conference crowns in the
long jump (6.42 meters) and high jump (1.86 meters), respectively,
for Worcester State, while Bridgewater State sophomore Ryan
D'Arcangelo (Norfolk, Mass.) took the other individual
title of the day in winning the 800 meters for the Bears in a time
of 1:59.78.
Westfield State finished as the runner-up to host Southern Maine in
the overall New England Alliance Championships that combines
competition from both the MASCAC and the Little East Conference, as
the Huskies posted a team score of 180 points to best the Owls'
total of 144 points and claim their fourth overall Alliance title
and first in four years. Fitchburg State was third (79
points) in the Alliance standings, while Worcester State (44
points) and Bridgewater State (20 points) placed sixth and ninth,
respectively, in Alliance competition.
