Four Owls Earn NFCA All-Region Honors
Honors continue to roll in for Westfield State's softball team, as four players were named to the National Fastpitch Coaches Association All-Region teams, which were announced on Friday in the midst of the NCAA Regional tournaments.
WESTFIELD, Mass. – Honors continue to roll in for Westfield State's softball team, as four players were named to the National Fastpitch Coaches Association All-Region teams, which were announced on Friday in the midst of the NCAA Regional tournaments.
Westfield senior catcher Mia Alfonso (Dalton, Mass./Pittsfield) and junior outfielder Kassidy LaTour (Lebanon, Conn./Lyman Memorial) were both named to the region II second team, with senior SS Sarah Hough (Southwick, Mass./ Southwick-Tolland) and senior 3B Hannah Wodecki (Southampton, Mass./Hampshire Regional) ticketed for the third team.
That quartet led the Owls to a 39-3 record this season, and a spot in the NCAA Bethlehem Regional Semifinals last weekend.
Alfonso finished the season batting .347 with seven home runs, 10 doubles and 36 RBI, while posting a strong season defensively behind the plate with a .979 fielding percentage and catching an Owls' pitching staff that posted a collective 1.97 ERA.
LaTour was one of the top hitters in the region with a .440 average, five home runs, 17 doubles, 42 rbi. She finished the campaign with 55 hits, a .744 slugging percentage and a .483 on-base percentage.
Hough was named the MASCAC's Player of the Year with a standout season at shortstop, where she batted .377 with 11 home runs, 17 doubles, 53 RBI and 42 runs scored. She made just six errors while leading the Owls' infield defense with a .964 fielding percentage.
Wodecki capped three outstanding season at Westfield with a .418 average, six home runs, a school-season record 18 doubles, 59 hits, 34 RBI and 48 runs scored.
All four players were first-team all-conference selections for the Owls, which won both the MASCAC regular season and tournament titles. Westfield opened the season with a 26 game winning streak, then won 13 straight, including three games in the MASCAC tournament and one in the NCAA regional before dropping their final two games of the season at the regional tournament.
