Raegan Mulherin and Mary Kate O’Day were Mid-Wach basketball rivals in high school, Mulherin at Narragansett Regional and O’Day at Tahanto Regional. These days, they are two-year teammates at Framingham State.
In fact, Mulherin, a Rams senior captain, was one of the main reasons O’Day also chose Framingham.
“In high school, I thought she was the best thing ever,” O’Day, a sophomore, said before Tuesday night’s practice. “I was really excited to be playing with her, and now that I actually am, it’s awesome.”
Mulherin, a Hometeam Super Team selection her senior year at Narragansett, scored her 1,000th career point against O’Day’s Tahanto team.
“I liked her determination and her love for the game,” said O’Day, who is from Berlin. “She dominated in every aspect, and I really admired her for it. It’s the same in college. She’s the most intense person I’ve ever played with.”
Mulherin, who is from Baldwinville, drilled a 3-pointer at the buzzer to lift the Rams past MCLA in a MASCAC semifinal last year. Framingham State lost to Westfield State in the conference final, but set a program record for wins with 21. Mulherin earned All-MASCAC and All-ECAC New England first-team honors.
She is one of just two seniors on this year’s squad, but the Rams, coached by former Fitchburg State coach Walter Paschal, was the MASCAC preseason co-favorite (with Westfield).
“We were expected to win the whole thing,” Mulherin said, “but with a young team things don’t always come the way it’s planned. We’ve worked our butts off, and young players have stepped up. We’ve found our groove. We’ve been playing great.”
The Rams (12-7) are 6-1 in the MASCAC and have won three straight heading into Wednesday’s game at Worcester State.
O’Day and Mulherin have played key roles in the Rams’ success this season.
O’Day is averaging 18.7 points per game to lead the conference, while Mulherin is averaging 16 and ranks third.
O’Day poured in a career-high 39 points in last week’s win over Fitchburg State and was named MASCAC Player of the Week. She scored 27 points in the first half.
“I definitely was in a zone, especially in the first quarter,” O’Day said. “I started out good, and that carried me the rest of the game.”
O’Day finished 14 of 25 from the field.
“She was on,” Mulherin said. “She did her thing. That’s what MK does. She showed up and she went off.”
As a senior at Narragansett, Mulherin averaged 22.4 points and ranked among the Central Mass. leaders in made 3-pointers. Earlier this season, she scored a career-high 37 points in a loss to Regis.
The Rams are one game behind Westfield State in the MASCAC standings and eyeing a strong finish to the regular season.
“It’s been a pretty good year, and I don’t want it to end,” Mulherin said. “Overall, I think we have a pretty good chance to keep doing what we’re doing.”
