FRAMINGHAM & WESTFIELD, Mass. -- Upsetting the higher seeds in their semifinal games on Friday, the Bridgewater State Bears and the Worcester State Lancers are set to meet in the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference Women's Soccer Championship game on Sunday in Bridgewater, Mass.
Playing in the first semifinal game on Friday, fourth-seeded Worcester State took on the top-seeded Framingham State Rams. Wasting no time to get themselves on the board, the Lancers' Cassie Giardina knocked one past Rams' goalie Sara Sullivan to put her team up 1-0 in the 11th minute.
Framingham State fought to get themselves back in the game during the first period with nine shots, but they were unable to get any to fall and went into halftime with a 1-0 deficit.
Worcester State added some insurance in the 62nd minute when Alicia Macomber got past Sullivan to give the Lancers a 2-0 advantage.
Adding one more score to the mix, Kendal Bergenholtz took advantage of an opening in the right side and drained the kick to give Worcester State a three goal lead and a trip to the championship game on Sunday.
Lancers' keeper Jillian Witkowski earned her fifth shutout of the season, stopping all four shots she faced.
Trying to earn their way into the title game, the second-seeded Westfield State Owls hosted the third-seeded Bridgewater State Bears. Getting themselves on the board first, the Owls' Amanda Grant scored on a pass from teammate Kate Matroni in the 12th minute.
The Bears took no time to respond, netting their own goal by Mackenzie Hatfield to even it all up at one. Grant would strike one more time for Westfield State before the half to give the Owls a 2-1 advantage.
Three minutes into the second period, the Bears once again would even up the score at two on a 30-yard cross from Hatfield to Lauren Bandoian making it 2-2. That score would hold until the end of regulation and the first overtime period.
Erica Jonasson netted the game-winning goal for Bridgewater State after Hatfield broke free up the sideline and attempted a shot that was saved by Westfield State goalie Jess Habif. In the ensuing chaos in front of the net, Jonasson received a pass from Marissa Yowell and drained it to stamp the Bears' ticket to the championship game.
Bridgewater State is making its 10th appearance in the conference championship while Worcester State will compete in their seventh. Previously this season, the two teams played to a 2-2 tie. The title contest is set to begin at noon on Sunday.
