BRIDGEWATER, Mass. -- The Bridgewater State University volleyball team dominated from start to finish as the fourth-seeded Bears downed fifth-seeded Salem State University, 3-0, in MASCAC Tournament quarterfinal round action on Wednesday evening at the Tinsley Center.
The Bears, who won by set scores of 25-19, 25-14 and 25-8, advance to the tournament semifinal round and will take on MCLA on Saturday at noon. The top-seeded Trailblazers are hosting both semifinal round matches as well as the championship match on Saturday.
BSU junior outside hitter Hannah Maymon (Narragansett, R.I.) paced the Bears with 13 kills, eight digs, an ace and a pair of solo blocks. Maymon also recorded a .455 hitting percentage.
Junior setter Charleyne Panner (Gilford, N.H.) added 33 assists and eight digs, while senior outside hitter Clara Goncalves (Dennis, Mass.) chipped in with ten kills and a .500 hitting percentage. Freshman middle hitter Elizabeth Roberts (Swansea, Mass.) checked in with three kills, five aces and six digs, and junior libero Samantha Fasoli (Sagamore Beach, Mass.) notched four aces and nine digs.
The Bears recorded 40 kills and a team hitting percentage of .318, while limiting the Vikings to just 19 kills and a .066 hitting percentage. Bridgewater also recorded 12 aces.
Senior middle Emily Peay (Lebanon, Conn.) led the way for the Vikings with seven kills, two aces and two blocks (one solo), while freshman setter Mackenzie Salls (Turners Falls, Mass.) registered ten assists and four digs, and freshman outside hitter Allison Vellucci (Northville, Mich.) added four kills, two aces and a solo block.
Bridgewater improves to 13-19 on the season with the win, while Salem ends the season with an overall mark of 6-20.
Westfield State 3, Worcester State 0 Box Score
WESTFIELD, Mass. – Westfield State University had three players in double figures in kills as the Owls attacked their way to a 3-0 victory over Worcester State University in the quarterfinal round of the MASCAC women's volleyball tournament.
#3 Westfield State improves to 15-15 overall, and the Owls will travel to North Adams, Mass., on Saturday to partake in the semifinals, and potentially championship game, all hosted at Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts. The Owls will face #2 seed Framingham State at 2:00 p.m. am in the semifinals. Top seed Mass College will face #4 Bridgewater in the other semifinal game at 12 noon.
Tonight for Westfield, seniors Kendyl Haney (11 kills), Casey Howe (11 kills) and Shannon Shea (10 kills) defended their home court one last time in powering the Owls to the win.
The first two games were very close, with Westfield edging the Lancers by a 26-24 score in the first, rallying from an early 6-2 deficit. Worcester led 23-22, but kills from Haney, Shea, and finally Casey Doremus accounted for three of the last four points for Westfield.
Westfield again held Worcester at arms' length in the second game, with a 25-23 score, and the Owls claimed the third game by a comparatively easier 25-17 margin.
Shea added 12 digs to go with her 10 kills, while Howe posted a strong .435 hitting percentage and totaled five blocks in the match. Sophomore setter Courtney Ryan had 32 assists, and freshman libero Lizzie Taylor led the Owls with 22 digs.
For sixth-seeded Worcester State, Jennifer Cabral was the lone hitter in double figures with 13 kills. Jamika Townsend had 23 assists and five kills of her own, with Valerie Hoyle adding seven kills. The Lancers complete their season with an 11-16 record.
