A $4.67 million renovation of Swenson Field, which will be home to the football, field hockey, lacrosse and track and field teams, is scheduled to be complete by Aug. 20.

The facility, which opened in the mid-1970s, will feature artificial Field Turf, lights, new bleachers, an expanded press box, a new track and scoreboard.

The improvement to Swenson Field is the latest piece of the athletics complex, which is located off Route 104. New baseball and softball fields, named Alumni Park, debuted in 1996 and the Adrian Tinsley Center, which houses the department of athletics, the basketball court and a fitness center, opened in 2002.

“Really, this is the last piece as far as the facilities are concerned, both for appearance and functionality,’’ said John Harper, BSU’s director of athletics. “The students deserve this, and in this economy, the college deserves a lot of credit for finding the wherewithal to put this up.

“We’re giving people jobs, but the long-term ramifications for this place next to the Tinsley Center is that it now gives athletics a centralized home.’’

The new-look Swenson Field will be quite different from the one the BSU football team played its final game of the 2009 season against Worcester State College last Oct. 31.

“This is a great recruiting tool for all the sports, even the ones that don’t use it,’’ said Glenn Gonsalves, an associate director of athletics and former BSU football player. “This is obviously helpful. (Men’s basketball coach) Joe Farroba said that even for him to be able to say to recruits, ‘These are the facilities we have on campus,’ is huge. You’ve got to keep up with the Joneses.’’

The first football game will be at 6 p.m. on Sept. 11 against the University of Massachusetts-Dartmouth. The men’s soccer team, which will continue using its natural grass field next to the Tinsley Center, is playing a game at Swenson Field the night of Sept. 8 against Mitchell College.

The bleachers and press box were in desperate need of being replaced because of years of wear and tear, and it looked like that might be the extent of the project.

A meeting last summer with BSU president Dana Mohler-Faria, vice president Miguel Gomes, associate vice president for facilities management and planning Karen Jason, vice president Tony Esposito and vice president for student affairs David Ostroth, resulted in the expansion of plans for Swenson Field.

“We talked about what I thought was going to be a $1.2 million bleachers and press box job,’’ said Harper, “and the president said, ‘What will it take to do it right?’ Mike Gomes was prepared for this. He had all the numbers and how it could get done.

“The president said, ‘If we don’t do it now, it won’t get done for another five or six years.’’’

Money for the state-funded job is coming from the school and the Massachusetts State College Building Authority.

Not only will there be new bleachers and a 54x14-foot press box, but the stadium will feature lights to allow night games and use by intramural sports. The Field Turf will let multiple-teams practice and play games at Swenson Field.

The track and field team, which has been without a home since the Swenson Field track from competition had to be shut down in 2002, will also be able to practice and compete on campus and have an eight-lane track.

The stadium will have 1,560 seats, including 250 chair-backs located at the 50-yard line. Those will be sold on a season-ticket and individual-game basis the day of the game for a little extra than the cost of a regular seat.

“I was deathly afraid that somebody was going to fall in those bleachers,’’ said Harper. “Those things were built before any building codes. Safety was my major concern. And the first five rows, you were looking at the backs of football players because they were so low.

“Obviously, the track team needed a place to practice and compete. They really haven’t competed at home for a good 10 years. For intramurals, it’s going to be a huge benefit because they’ll be having night games. It’ll have a lot of benefit to the entire campus.’’

The football team will be practicing on the turf field a couple of times a week after having to use inadequate practice field on various parts of the campus.

“They lost their practice field behind Kelly Gym with a new science building going up, and last year, they were practicing on a field where the conditions were horrendous,’’ said Gonsalves. “There was no water to water the field. It was torn up in two or three weeks.

“It’s going to be great to be able to play under conditions where it’s a true surface all the time. You get a lot of injuries from bad surfaces. I think a lot of kids growing up now, it’s a common thing. They don’t know what it’s like to play on a natural surface.’’

The renovation, which was designed by Gale Associates of Weymouth with the construction work being done by Bond Brothers of Everett, is on schedule. The scoreboard is already up and the track and Field Turf will soon be finished.

“We’re very pleased,’’ said Harper. “It’s really nice to have everything like this in one centralized location, and Swenson Field is going to be a nice recruiting tool for us now.’’
