GORHAM, Maine -- Westfield State University captured its fifth straight Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference Men’s Indoor Track & Field championship on Saturday afternoon at Southern Maine’s Costello Sports Complex Fieldhouse.
The Owls posted a team score of 219 points to outdistance runner-up Fitchburg State’s team total of 122 points. Worcester State placed third overall with a team score of 93 points, while Bridgewater State finished fourth in the competition with 86 points.
Westfield State had five different individuals capture conference individual championships during the competition, led by junior Jonathan Joyce (Milford, Mass.) and sophomore Brendan Corcoran (Walpole, Mass.), who set league records in the 3,000 meters (8:50.47) and 800 meters (1:58.15), respectively. Junior Patrick Regan (Wilbraham, Mass.) and sophomores John Murphy (Boxboro, Mass.) and Anthony Frissora (Shrewsbury, Mass.) also took top honors in the mile (4:26.20), 200 meters (23.30) and 1,000 meters (2:40.22), respectively, while the tandem of sophomores Scott Bockus (Athol, Mass.), Seth Arnold (Southwick, Mass.) and Victor Silva (Dracut, Mass.), along with freshman Cam Fairbanks (Hopkinton, Mass.), took the title in the 4 X 800 relay with a time of 8:24.30.
Fitchburg State senior Matt Muolo (Stoneham, Mass.) was the only double-winner event winner on the day, as he took top honors in both the shot put (47-09.00) and weight throw (57-06.50, a new conference record), while senior Alex LeBlanc (Ashburnham, Mass.) and junior Julian Stakely (Gales Ferry, Conn.) captured crowns in the pole vault (conference record 14-07.25) and 55 meters (6.59), respectively, for the Falcons. Worcester State had four different individuals take titles in their respective events, as senior RJ Stahelski (South Deerfield, Mass.), sophomore Todd Paquin (Pelham, N.H.) and freshmen Andrew Johnson (Thompson, Conn.) and Devlin Crawford (Randolph, Mass.) took top accolades in the 600 meters (1:23.96), long jump (22-00.25), high jump (5-11.25) and 400 meters (51.16), respectively. Stahelski and Crawford were joined by freshmen Ramses Raphael (Lawrence, Mass.) and Aaron Correia (Fall River, Mass.) in capturing the 4 X 400 relay with a time of 3:28.13.
Bridgewater State received a pair of first place performances from freshmen Joshua Danner-Hicks (Haverhill, Mass.) and Matt Horan (Billerica, Mass.) in the triple jump (43-05.00) and 55 meter high hurdles (7.88), respectively, to round out the all-conference honors.
Westfield State finished as the runner-up to Southern Maine in the overall New England Alliance Championships that combines competition from both the MASCAC and Little East Conference, as the Huskies earned their third straight title with 151 points to best the Owls’ total of 99 points. Fitchburg State placed sixth in the final Alliance standings with 59.50 points, while Worcester State (45.50) and Bridgewater State (34) followed in seventh and eighth place, respectively.
